Fruit Salad - The Very Hungry Caterpillar

 

 

The PNs are making their own Fruit Salad based on the Story - The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

They are introduced to a variety of fruits such as apples, pears, plums, strawberries and oranges.  They count the number of fruits too as they make their fruit salad.

 

 

Zhi Yuan's favourite fruit is apple.

Faith counted the number of pears.  She said,"Two pears!"

Yi Cheng was excited to touch the plum.  It was his first time tasting it in school.

"How many oranges are there?" Cloey said ,"Five oranges!" she said as she counted them.

The children used plastic knives to cut their fruits.

They cut their fruits patiently. 

Quinny loves the oranges.  It's the first fruit she took.

Denzel was busy removing the leaves from the strawberries.  He then used the plastic knife to dice the strawberry.

This is their favourite session.  Tasting their own fruit salad.

Caleb definitely loves the strawberries.  He ate it all instantly.

With this mouth-watering session, the children learnt to prepare and make their own fruit salad.  Mom and Dad, you can get your children to be involved in food preparation at home too.  This will encourage your children to explore and taste a variety of food that are healthy!

Outdoor play is always something that the children looked forward to! 

It is also a time where they learn through play such as enhancing their social skills, numeracy like counting how many scoops to fill up the mould, using their senses to feel the sand and many other learning which is involved during sand play! 

 

Hmmm.... That container looks nice... Maybe I can ask my friend later.

Scoop, scoop, and keep scooping... And pour it out again.

"What do you have in there, Kiera?"

So engrossed in the pretend play cookery!

 

If it has been awhile since they last visited a beach with sand play, dear parents it's time to bring them soon! 

Through sensorial hands-on play, the children get to learn much more!

Let's fly parachutes!!!

The children are counting the number of styrofoams on the satay sticks.

Look at how focused they are trying to poke the styrofoams into the satay stick! It definitely enhances their eye-hand coordination and to stay focus.

Next, they learnt to thread the yarn through the hole on the plastic.

It's time to decorate the parachutes.

The PNs help to keep the waterplay materials before they leave for shower time.

Mummy and Daddy, do remember to bring my swim wear on every Friday so that I may play in the pool! 

However, if I'm unwell, I will not be able to be in the pool to avoid spreading germs.

   Importantly, let's try to go swimming weekly to play with water and at the same time strengthen up my gross motor skill!

Making of Parachutes!

Based on the theme transportation, we are trying to create an air transport, parachute,

with the children!

They started decorating their work on the plastic sheet. Children were asked why the material, plastic, is used instead of others. They learnt that plastic is one of the lightest material and is able to trap air which is one of the important factors.

Let's poke the styrofoams into the satay stick.

Some are still very focussed in completing their decorations.

They are given opportunities to find ways to make holes for the yarn, thread the yarn through the holes and use scotch tape if required.

Children continued to have a sharing session among themselves.

All the above craft work does enhance in children's creativity, fine motor skills and to stay focus to complete their creation. 

 

We hope you have a great time carrying out the parachute experiment with your child to further reinforce their learning at home! You can also use a blanket or towel to pretend to be another air transport!

In the month of April, we visited New Zealand and learnt that it is located in the continent of Australasia.

Let's sing the 7 continents song, shall we?

There are 7 continents in the world, 

7 continents in the world.

North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia...

Not forgetting Australasia,

Not forgetting Antartica!

After going through our discussion on what the children know about New Zealand, Meera, our classmate, told Ms. Fizah that she had been there!

Hence, Ms. Fizah told Meera to share her experiences with us.

Meera's parents were very much involved in getting her ready for her presentation about her trip to New Zealand. We really appreciate it!

Below are pictures of Meera sharing her knowledge and experiences.

It was awesome looking at Meera's presentation. 

We were especially amazed to know that there were penguins' nest built under the cottage that Meera resided at! She also shared her experience of riding the helicopter, on board a cruise and her family driving through a road which has thick forest on both side.

Apart from Meera's presentation, Ms. Jane also bought green and golden kiwi fruits for us! Some of us had tasted the kiwi fruits before, while it was the first time for a few of us. 

We realised that green kiwi fruit has thicker hair than the golden kiwi fruit. 

We were observing the seeds in the kiwi fruits. There were a lot of them and extremely small too! 

Time to taste the fruit! Oooooh!!! The green kiwi fruit definitely tasted slightly sour, though!

To end our learning journey, we also did hand / face painting just like the Maoris, the aboriginals of New Zealand!
