To vegetable farm we go!

 

On a hot sunny Tuesday, we made our way to the Aero-Green Technology. We were introduced to the different ways, in which the plants are planted. This farm uses soil, hydroponic as well as aeroponic method. Children walked around the farm, to learn more about the different types of plants available in the farm. We ended the visit by eating freshly plucked guavas... Yum yum... :)

Scents around me

In the month of January, the N1 children were exploring their senses. Teacher brought in some cinnamon sticks, rose buds, jasmine flowers and perfume. Children had the opportunity to see, touch, feel and smell the items. 

Children learnt that their five senses are special, and it has its own purpose. We can't do without any of it!

You may also like to reinforce the extension that we have done by blindfolding and get them to smell or touch and guess the item! 

How our stomach works

In the month January, the Kindergarten children talked about the stomach and how it mechanically squishes the food up even more. Teacher introduced the idea of stomach acid that continues to break down and soften the food even more. Here are the pictures of the Kindergarten doing the experiment. 

We discussed about digestive acid in the stomach again, and showed them what happened when we added some vinegar to the green water to make our pretend stomach  acid. The kids were asked to be the stomachs, to mush the crackers up so that our pretend body could digest it. Next up, intestines! We used the stocking and cut off the toe, and used the empty water cup to hold it open, cut the corner off the ziplocks and had the kids helped to squeeze the stomach contents into the intestines. They were showed how the lining of the intestines was permeable- it lets some oozy stuff out which we called it as the nutrients. It was explained that the blood vessels came right up next to the intestines and let the blood pick up food for all the hungry cells. As we squeezed more of the mush through the nylon, more of it came out the sides as nutrients, and the stuff in the middle got smaller. I asked them which was bigger, all the food we eat in a day piled together or the poop we have on the following day, and pointed out that that’s because our body takes in and keeps all the good stuff and pushes the rest out as poop. The grand finale, of course, was when the nylon finally pooped out the leftover green-cracker-mush-pretend-poop. Messy but totally worth it!

We can do it too!

Through Montessori Practical Life skill and integrated in with our theme for the month on 'Myself', the children had more opportunities to be guided in putting on socks, jackets, shirt and also learnt to button and zip with the Montessori frames.

Here are some of their pictures while they are in action:

He is able to remove all the buttons by himself.

He attempted to put on the shirt himself.

He explored and attempted to zip and unzip the frame himself.

He is able to put on the socks himself!

She is fast in putting on both socks all by herself!

He needed some assistance on putting on the jacket.

She is able to put it on independently.

With all the exposure and further guidance that we may provide even at home, we are sure that they are able to be even more independent!

Little Designers @work

As we learnt about the importance of self-care, we have also guided the children in removing, putting on, folding and keeping their clothes away neatly. 

These are all important life-skills to have and we are proud that most of them are doing it well! 

We took the opportunity to let them further explore how a shirt may be designed. They are shown with various types of patterns, colours and shirts to let them try and feel how it is like. After that, they are allowed to self-create their own design that they will like to have with different types of materials provided.

Apart from that, they also learnt about patterning. They have used buttons to create an AB pattern and reinforced on colours.

While waiting for their turn, they started to plan and draw how they want their shirts to be. It is with planning, they have to start thinking and use their drawing skills to further express their ideas.
