All about Sushi

With the Sea Creature theme, children were introduced to a variety of edible sea creatures such as fish (tuna), prawns, crab etc. Using these as the ingredients for Sushi-making, the children got full hands-on experience on how to use a knife to slice the ingredients and rolling a bamboo mat. They also learnt to use terms such as slicing and rolling during the session.

Children were given the opportunity to get to 'touch' the ingredients before cutting them into smaller pieces. Cloey was pretty excited exploring the ingredients.

Faith could not wait to slice the crabmeat.

Kayden said, 'Prawn."

The children were curious to see what was in the big bowl.  It was Sushi Rice!

Quinny was very patient and gave her full focus in slicing the carrot.

Faith was the first to try rolling the Sushi using the bamboo mat.  She was able to roll it own her own.  She seems quite a pro as during Montessori sessions, rolling mats are her daily practices.

Dorothy independently flatten out her rice on the seaweed wrap and placed her sliced ingredients on it.

Ruixi took sometime before she wants to get her hands 'dirty' on the Sushi rice.

Denzel was fast to get the rice flatten!

Caleb did not use the bamboo mat  but he was able to roll out his Sushi.  Superb skills.

As Zhi Yuan is a vegetarian, his Sushi was special.  It was pure made of vegetables such as carrots and zucchinis!

Cookery sessions for the young ones are not just about FOOD but developing Practical Life Skills too!
Just by Sushi making alone, the children has develop few skills such as slicing or cutting using a knife and rolling.  Well done Children!
